Your driveway will likely need concrete maintenance at some point in time.

Our driveways are often underappreciated parts of our hardscaping. Most homeowners use them every single day to keep their cars off of the busy neighborhood streets, and believe it or not; a well-kept driveway can heighten the curb appeal and value of your home. However, most driveways are made out of concrete, which is prone to weathering or damage by nature or other causes such as oil spills. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to perform occasional concrete maintenance to keep your driveway in tip-top shape. Want to learn more about concrete maintenance for your driveway? Learn more about the process here.

Dealing with Cracks

Cracks are often the first type of damage you will see on your concrete driveway. Cracks are usually caused by weathering weakening the concrete structure but can also be caused by water being frozen and subsequently melted in the wintertime. Since both of these factors are completely unavoidable, concrete maintenance must be performed on occasion to prevent these cracks from growing and ruining your driveway. Once a crack reaches a width of about an eighth of an inch is when it should be looked at. When cracks are small, they are much easier to perform concrete maintenance on. Try picking up a tube of concrete sealant to fill in the offending fissure.

Stained Concrete Maintenance

Chances are you don’t have an auto-mechanic set up in your backyard, so you’ll likely be performing your DIY auto-maintenance on your driveway. Unfortunately, due to the nature of auto maintenance, spill accidents are very likely to happen. Certain types of fluids used in auto-maintenance like motor oil, lubricant grease, or antifreeze can stain your concrete, especially if it is in a lighter shade of concrete. Luckily, by performing a little concrete maintenance magic, you can remove most if not all of the problematic stains. There are many concrete maintenance cleaners available for stain removal, many of which are nontoxic and effective. All you’ll need is a water hose to wipe off the residue when you’re finished!

Asphalt Cracks

Lastly, if you own a multi-occupancy building such as an apartment complex, you will likely be dealing with a parking lot instead of a driveway. Concrete maintenance likely won’t be necessary for this situation because most residential parking lots are made of asphalt. Asphalt is sturdier than concrete, but it is still susceptible to damage. Luckily, asphalt maintenance is very similar to concrete maintenance in terms of cleaning and crack-filling, so you won’t need to change the routine too much. Just look for the same products, but made for asphalt repair.
